On August 22, 1917, Carson Bigbee of the Pittsburgh Pirates sets a major league record by coming to bat 11 times in a 22-inning game against the Brooklyn Dodgers. Pirate reliever Elmer Jacobs also sets a record by pitching 16 2/3 innings of relief.
Chris Colabello of the Blue Jays is suspended for 80 games for using a banned PED. Colabello came out of the independent leagues to become a big contributor in Toronto’s division title in 2015.

The Red Sox swat the Orioles twice, winning 7 – 4 and 12 – 3. Reggie Smith is 7 for 9 and stretches his hitting streak to 19 games. Carl Yastrzemski has a homer in each game as the Red Sox total 22 hits in the nitecap, including five by Mike Andrews.

Bill Sweeney, Red Sox 1B, makes 21 putouts, one fewer than Hal Chase’s 1906 record. Boston outfielders have no putouts as the Red Sox lose, 7 – 3, in Cleveland.
June 24, 1931
The Astros conclude an outstanding first half by demolishing the Blue Jays, 19 – 1, for their 60th win of the year, most in the American League. Carlos Correa homers twice and drives in 5 runs, while José Altuve, Yuli Gurriel and Evan Gattis also go deep in support of Brad Peacock’s pitching. The Blue Jays are one out away from suffering the worst shutout loss in their history when Ezequiel Carrera goes deep to save a modicum of pride.
