On February 14 1934 — The Cleveland Indians sign former Washington Senators 19-year outfielder Sam Rice to a contract for the upcoming season. He will bat .293 in 335 at-bats for the Indians, but will fall 13 hits shy of the 3,000 mark before retiring. Rice will win election to the Hall of Fame in 1963.

The Twins’ Joe Niekro is caught with a file on the mound and is ejected during the 4th inning of Minnesota’s 11 – 3 win over California. He will be suspended for 10 games by American League president Bobby Brown, who doesn’t buy Niekro’s story that he had been filing his nails on the bench and stuck the file in his back pocket when the inning started.

In the nightcap of a Cleveland Stadium doubleheader, Indians pinch-hitter Max Alvis hits a two-run homer in the ninth to knot the score at 3-3, and two innings later, Leon Wagner, also pinch hitting, blasts a two-run round-tripper to beat the Twins, 6-4. The two pinch-hit home runs in one game tie a major league record.
August 15, 1965
Cleveland beats Boston, 6 – 4, as Mike Garcia wins his 20th. With the Yanks losing to Billy Pierce and Chicago, 7 – 1, the Indians and Yankees are tied for first place. This is the 10th time the two teams have been in a tie for first place, surpassing the major-league record of nine set in the National League race of 1889 and the Federal League race of 1914.
