1939 Spring Training Game Audio New York Yankees vs Cincinnati Reds

 

 

On March 15, 1939 the New York Yankees face the Cincinnati Reds in a spring training game. These two teams will also face off in the 1939 World Series.

The Yankees finished with a record of 106–45, winning their 11th pennant, finishing 17 games ahead of the Boston Red Sox, the Red Sox were the only team New York had a losing effort against going 8-11-1. New York was managed by Joe McCarthy. The Yankees were shaken when their leader Lou Gehrig was forced to retire in 1939, on July 4th he will give his luckiestman speech. In the World Series, New York waltzed by the Cincinnati Reds in 4 games. This marked the first time any team had won four consecutive World Series and the first season for the team’s radio gameday broadcasts.

New York was lead by 5 Hall of Famers, Joe Gordon, Bill Dickey, Red Ruffing, Lefty Gomex and Joe DiMaggio, DiMaggio hit .381 with 30 homruns as he hit he peak.

The Reds won 97 games and had future Hall of Famer Ernie Lombardi leading the team, they were paced by Bucky Walters who won 27 and Paul Derringer who won 25 for the Redlegs. They were however dismantled in 4 straight in the World Series.
