Cardinals pitcher Larry Jackson suffers a broken jaw when hit by a fragment of Dodgers Duke Snider’s broken bat

On March 27, 1961 —  In a spring training game, Cardinals pitcher Larry Jackson suffers a broken jaw when hit by a fragment of Dodgers Duke Snider’s broken bat. Jackson will be sidelined for four weeks.

Snider had gathered a home run and a double off Jackson before coming to bat in the sixth! rapping the fateful blow, Jackson tried to field the grounder and was hit by the piece of bat while his eyes were on the ball Snider scooted to first but was thrown out when he tried to make it to second After the out, he hurried to the mound to see how Jackson was faring The 29 year old 6-foot-2 190-pound pitcher never lost consciousness witnesses said but was knocked to the ground He was given emergency treatment at Vero Beach and then flown to St Petersburg and hospitalized here His jaw was wired and he’ll be on a liquid diet for some time although he should be out of the hospital by mid-week It’s the liquid diet more than the broken jaw that’s expected to keep him out of the lineup.
