On November 23, 1971 — 1971 – Danny Murtaugh, manager of the World Champion Pittsburgh Pirates, announces his retirement for health reasons. Bill Virdon is named to replace him. Murtaugh will return to manage the Pirates in 1974 as a replacement for Virdon after he is fired.
