On February 17 1980 — 1980 – While taping separate interviews at KNBC-TV studios in Burbank, CA, Giants coach Jim Lefebvre and Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda trade punches after a brief argument, leaving Lasorda with a bloody lip. Lefebvre had been a Dodger coach in 1979 until he was fired by Lasorda.
Rickie Weeks homers and doubles twice as the Brewers defeat the Cubs, 7 – 5, to complete their climb to the top of the NL Central, claiming sole possession of first place after a slow start to the season. Ryan Braun doubles twice, singles and scores three runs and Corey Hart also has three hits as the Brew Crew’s bats are not dampened by rainy conditions at Wrigley Field.

The Phillies and Jose Contreras agree to a $5.5 million, two-year deal that will keep the 38 year-old right-hander in Philadelphia. The one-time starter played a vital role as a reliever for the NL East champions, posting a 6-4 record along with four saves in 67 appearances in his first season in the bullpen.

Defeating the Senators, 11-5, at Washington’s Griffith Stadium, Indians’ hurler Wes Ferrell becomes the first pitcher in this century to win 20 or more games in each of his first four seasons. The Greensboro, NC native, who will post a 23-12 record this season, won 21, 25, and 22 games for Cleveland during the past three years.

Scott Elarton is tossed in the 1st after plunking leadoff hitter Rey Sanchez in retaliation for Craig Biggio being hit.
