The San Francisco Giants take the World Series opener with a 4 – 3 win over the Anaheim Angels

On October 19, 2002 — At Edison International Field of Anaheim, The San Francisco Giants take the World Series opener with a 4 – 3 win over the Anaheim Angels. Barry Bonds, Reggie Sanders and J.T. Snow hit home runs for the Giants as pitcher Jason Schmidt gets the win. Troy Glaus hits a pair of home runs for Anaheim.

Tsuyoshi Shinjo, the Giants’ designated hitter, becomes the first Japanese-born player to appear in the World Series. The Osaka native gets a hit in his three trips to the plate.

The contest marks the first time two wild-card teams have faced one another in the World Series.
