On February 4 2019 – The 2019 Caribbean Series open in Ciudad de Panamá, having been moved from Barquisimeto, Lara, because of major political unrest in Venezuela. Undaunted, the Venezuelan League representatives, Cardenales de Lara defeat Jalisco of Mexico, 5 – 1 to complete the first day’s action, behind the pitching of Nestor Molina and a two-run homer in the 6th inning by Carlos Rivero, the survivor of a road accident that killed two of his teammates the previous December. In the tournament opener, Nestor Cortes pitches 5 strong innings to lead Estrellas Orientales, the Dominican League champions, over Santurce of Puerto Rico, 3 – 1.
1974 – St. Louis Cardinals speedster Lou Brock is named Sportsman of the Year by The Sporting News. He finishes ahead of such sports luminaries as tennis great Jimmy Connors, golfer Johnny Miller, and Dodgers ironman reliever Mike Marshall.

During year-end celebrations, a shooting takes place in Luperon, a town on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic, leaving a 25-year-old man dead and his 17-year-old brother wounded. Three days later, police announce that the main suspect is Orioles pitcher Alfredo Simon, who claims his innocence but goes in hiding in his hometown of Santiago. He will surrender to police on January 3rd.

In Pittsburgh, Vic Willis stops Brooklyn on just one hit, a topped roller in the 3rd inning by Zack Wheat. It will be the closest ever to a no-hitter by any pitcher at Forbes Field.

With Terry Moore sidelined after fracturing his foot yesterday, the Cards top Brooklyn, 4 – 2, behind Jesse Haines. Paul Dean saves the game in relief. In the second game of the doubleheader in St. Louis, a tired Dizzy Dean again fails in relief, giving up three runs as Brooklyn wins, 8 – 7. The Cards are now trailing the Cubs by 2 1/2 games.
