On February 6 2019 — 2019 – The Toros de Herrera, representing host country Panama, win their second straight game at the 2019 Caribbean Series, defeating Santurce of Puerto Rico, 8 – 7. Trailing 6 – 1 after 6 innings, the Toros score 4 runs in the 7th and complete the comeback with 3 more in the 9th, highlighted by a two-run double by pinch-hitter Jilton Calderon. Manny Corpas records the save as Puerto Rico scores once in the bottom of the frame. In the opening game, the Cardenales de Lara of Venezuela also notch their second win, defeating Las Tunas of Cuba, 1 – 0, behind a strong pitching performance by Wilfredo Boscan who allows just 3 hits in 6 2/3 innings but leaves with the game still scoreless. Alejandro De Aza drives in the game’s only run with a sacrifice fly in the 7th, and reliever Alexis Rivero receives credit for the win.
1982 – Bob Lillis replaces Bill Virdon as manager of the Houston Astros. Virdon was the senior manager in the National League, having managed the Astros since 1975.

En route to tossing a 9-0 shutout against the Toronto Maple Leafs, 19 year-old Babe Ruth of the AAA Providence Grays hits the first home run in his professional career. The site of the ‘Sultan of Swat’s’ only minor-league homer, Hanlan’s Point Stadium, which was located on Lake Ontario’s Toronto Islands near the city’s mainland, is being promoted as a historical landmark by Jerry Amernic, author of Gift of the Bambino.

1926 – At the Polo Grounds, the Cardinals clinch the pennant by beating the Giants, 6 – 4, behind Flint Rhem and Bill Sherdel. Billy Southworth homers to help beat his old teammates, negating Bill Terry’s three-run home run off Rhem. The Cards are now ahead of Cincinnati by three games with two to play. The Reds lose to the Phillies today, 9 – 2.

Jack Coombs wins his third game of the World Series when he goes the distance to beat the Cubs at Chicago’s West Side Grounds, 7-2. The A’s right-hander, in addition to winning Game 5 to give Philadelphia the world championship, also had complete-game victories in Games 2 and 3 of the Fall Classic.
