The ruling is a result of Steinbrenner’s $40,000 payment to confessed gambler Howie Spira for damaging information about since-traded Yankee star Dave Winfield.

He had relinquished the team’s operations to his son Hal Steinbrenner as his health deteriorated badly in 2008.
