On February 4 2005 — A dentist, who became partially blind after being struck attempting to catch a foul ball, is appealing his case against the Philadelphia Phillies which alleges more needs to be done to protect fans. The case, dismissed by a Philadelphia Common Pleas judge citing multiple warnings were made by the club including public address announcements, text on the back of the ticket, and posted signs in the ballpark, will now be heard in the state’s Commonwealth Court.
Four days shy of his 47th birthday, Phil Niekro’s 24-year Hall of Fame career comes to an end when the Yankees put him on waivers at the end of spring training. The right-handed knuckleballer, best known for his tenure with the Braves, compiled a 318-274 record along with a 3.35 ERA while hurling for four teams, that also included the Yankees, Indians, and Blue Jays.

Jeanmar Gomez throws a 3 – 0 perfect game for the Akron Aeros against the Trenton Thunder in Trenton. Damaso Espino is the batterymate for the Eastern League gem. It is the first perfect game in Aeros history and the first that Trenton is ever involved in. It is the first minor league perfecto since Guillermo Moscoso performed the feat in 2007. The game is saved by a diving catch by OF Matt McBride in the 9th inning.

After hitting 10 home runs in six consecutive games, establishing a new major league record, Frank Howard of the Washington Senators is stopped by Detroit Tigers pitcher Earl Wilson, who defeats the Senators, 5 – 4, in the first game of a doubleheader. In the second game, Al Kaline hits a two-run homer off Washington’s Steve Jones to become the Tigers’ all-time home run leader, surpassing Hank Greenberg. Detroit wins, 7 – 0, completing a sweep.

1911 – The Philadelphia Athletics score twice in the 11th inning to beat the New York Giants, 3 – 2, in Game 3 of the World Series. Frank Baker hits a home run in the 9th inning off Christy Mathewson to tie the score, 1 – 1. Baker will be tagged with the nickname “Home Run” Baker for his exploits.
