1945 – Bob Quinn gives up his post as general manager of the Boston Braves, allowing his son, John, to take over. The elder Quinn, a veteran of baseball employment since 1900, had served the Braves as president and general manager off and on since 1924.
February 14, 1945
Cory Lidle, recently obtained from the Phillies along with Bobby Abreu in a trade-deadline deal, throws six scoreless innings to get the 2-1 win as the Yankees complete a five-game sweep of the Red Sox at Fenway Park. Dubbed the “Boston Massacre II”, the lopsided series reminds fans of the rivalry of a similar meltdown in Boston in 1978.

In the top of the ninth, the Twins recover from blowing a 6-0 lead, when Jason Kubel’s two-out pop up lands behind the pitcher’s mound untouched by the Rays’ middle infielders for the go-ahead single in the team’s eventual 8-6 victory. The odd play, a result of the ball ricocheting off a catwalk and changing direction 190 feet above Tropicana Field, will prompt a change of the ground rules for postseason games played in Tampa Bay.
