At Shea Stadium, the New York Mets win their 11th consecutive home opener

On April 3, 1989 — At Shea Stadium, the New York Mets win their 11th consecutive home opener, an 8 – 4 decision over the St. Louis Cardinals. The Mets have now won on Opening Day in 18 of the last 20 seasons. Dwight Gooden gets the win and despite giving up a 3 run go-ahead homerun to Pedro Guerrero in the 3rd. Howard Johnson goes 3-4 with 3 RBI’s and goes deep for the Mets, Darryl Strawberry also goes 3-3.
