At Memorial Stadium, Mickey Mantle slices an opposite field homer in the 8th inning off Dick Hall to give New York a 3 – 2 win over the Orioles.
Los Angeles Angels pitcher Dick Wantz dies following surgery for brain cancer. The 25-year-old Wantz had made his debut only one month earlier, pitching one inning in relief in his only major league appearance.
In the second game of a doubleheader, Cleveland and Boston combine for nine double plays, tying an American League record.
The Elmira Pioneers beat the Springfield Giants, 2 – 1, in 27 innings, a new record (since broken) for Organized Baseball’s longest game. The attendance is 386 fans.
