The surprising 4th-place Senators fall to a game above .500 when Ted Williams’ two-run home run off Pedro Ramos gives Boston a 2 – 1 win. Billy Muffett allows just three hits, including Jim Lemon’s 38th home run, in a quick one hour, 40 minute win. A late collapse – 15 losses in their final 18 games – will drop Washington to 5th place, but that will still be the club’s best finish in seven years. The club will continue its improvement in Minnesota.

With Ty Cobb among the 49,055 fans in attendance at Yankee Stadium, Mickey Mantle cracks a two-run homer, his 35th, off the O’s Chuck Estrada to give New York a 2 – 0 lead in the 1st. Yogi Berra adds a home run. In the last of the 8th, Bobby Richardson’s hit off Estrada’s glove drives in two runs for a 5 – 3 New York win.

Willie Mays, who collects 5 hits in 6 at-bats, ties a major league mark by hitting three triples in the Giants’ 8-6 victory over Philadelphia. The ‘Say Hey Kid’s eleventh inning three-bagger leads to the eventual go-ahead run in the Connie Mack Stadium contest.

Thanks to one of Giants starter Mike McCormick’s strongest performances of the year, plus a St. Louis 6 – 5 squeaker over Milwaukee, Pittsburgh’s pennant run stalls briefly, their magic number frozen at 11. Struck out 13 times by the 6′ 2″ southpaw, the Pirates’ only genuine threat, reports Giants beat writer Bob Stevens, is “a momentarily frightening blast over the left-field wall by Roberto Clemente in the 7th.” It comes off a low and inside McCormick change-up, according to Jack Hernon of the Post-Gazette, and goes “a mile high, far over the left-field fence at the 406 mark with Gino Cimoli on the hassocks.” Clemente’s clout brings the Bucs back to within one shortly after Willie Mays’ audacious base-running and the ensuing Mazeroski miscue have sparked a tie-breaking, three-run 6th. Unfortunately for the Bucs, the usually reliable Elroy Face allows two 9th-inning add-on runs, making McCormick’s final frame a relatively ho-hum affair.
