Babe Ruth hits 51st and 52nd homers in twin bill to help the New York Yankees to clinch pennant

On September 13, 1927, Babe Ruth hits two home runs to lead the New York Yankees to a doubleheader sweep and the clinching of the American League pennant. Ruth hits his 51st and 52nd home runs while Waite Hoyt earns his 20th victory of the season. The Yankees win a pair from Cleveland to clinch the American League pennant with a 98-41 record and 17-game lead. It is Miller Huggins’ fifth pennant, tying him with Connie Mack.

During the First Game – Homers by Babe Ruth and Earl Combs gave the Yankees a victory over the Cleveland Indians in the first game of their double-header today, 5 to 3.

The Babe’s homer, the fifty-first for him this season, came in the seventh inning with Koenig on base by a single. These two runs put the score at three-all. In the eighth Combs drove the ball deep into centerfield for the circuit. The ball did not leave the field. Combs got a single and triple as well.

George Pipgras on the slab for the Yanks allowed the Indians eight hits, the Yanks nicked Willis Hudlin, the Indians’ moundsman for twelve safeties.

Game Two

A clout in the right-field bleachers in the fourth inning of the second game of the double-header between the Yankees and the Indians gave Babe Ruth his fifty-second homer of the season and tied the score. Homer No. 52 was made off Joe Shaute. It was the second homer for the Babe today, as he hit another circuit wallop to tie the score in the first game. The Yankees scored 4 in the 4th to go out 5-2, and Hoyt will cruise to a 5-3 win his 21st of the season.

Fonesca also hit a. homer for the Indians, scoring Shaute ahead of him in the third.

The Babe’s second round-tripper put him seven ahead of Lou Gehrig and apparently settled their individual home-run race unless Columbia Lou uncorks a big rally.

Ruth is now only seven homers behind his record total of 59 made in 1921. At this stage of that season Ruth had 55. The Yanks have fifteen more games to play.
