While the cause of the brawl is unclear, Pirates owner Barney Dreyfuss reports it to the National League offices and Bowerman is fined $100. Clarke gets no fine, but does take home a black eye. Christy Mathewson then pitches his 5th victory over Pittsburgh, defeating them, 8 – 2, and beating Sam Leever. Sam Mertes, who will lead the National League in doubles and RBIs, doubles home three runs in the 5th.

 

On August 20, 1903 — The National League-leading Pirates set an NL mark for inept fielding, making six errors in the 1st inning, giving the Giants seven runs toward a 13 – 7 win in the first of two games. Christy Mathewson, with relief in the 6th inning, coasts to his 23rd win. Deacon Phillippe wins the nightcap, 4 – 1, for the Pirates to keep the Giants five games back.
