The 6’5″ Schiraldi emerged as the Red Sox’ bullpen ace in the latter half of 1986, saving nine games and fanning 55 batters in 51 innings, but he self-destructed in the postseason, losing Game Four of the ALCS and Games Six and Seven of the WS. Traded to the Cubs with Al Nipper for Lee Smith, he was an ineffective starter in 1988 and was returned to the bullpen in 1989. The Cubs dealt him along with Darrin Jackson for Luis Salazar and Marvell Wynne in August of ’89.
In 1983, Schiraldi was a teammate of Roger Clemens, Greg Swindell, and Bruce Ruffin for the University of Texas NCAA baseball champions.
