December 7, 1980 Whitey Herzog makes his first major move in the St. Louis Cardinals rebuild when he signs catcher Darrell Porter as a free agent. Although he will hit .237 over his 5 years in St Louis, he will win the NLCS and World Series MVP in 1982 when St Louis won their first title since 1967.  The baseball reference JAWS ratings has him as the 21st best catcher in baseball history.
