Dave Bristol was a successful minor league manager leading multiple clubs to league titles at a young age. In 1966 he was named to the Reds coaching staff. Under manager Don Heffner the club got off to a disappointing start of 37-46. With stars like Vada Pinson, Pete Rose and Tony Perez, the 1966 team seemed to be underachieving.

Bristol was named manager of the club and went 39-38 the rest of the season. The next season the club improved to 87-75. In 1968 the Reds went 83-79. In 1969 it went 89-73. Despite what could be regarded as a successful season he was fired and replaced by Sparky Anderson.

Bristol spent all or part of 8 more years managing with the Braves, Brewers and Giants but had no more winning seasons. He spent several years on major league coaching staffs. His last 2 were in Cincinnati under two of his former players, 1989 with Rose and 1993 with Perez. Unfortunately neither Reds legend finished the season. In 2018 Dave Bristol was named to the Reds Hall of Fame.
