March 29th Highlights
Opening series have wrapped up today. Hot starts have led to sweeps by Boston, Texas, Oakland and the Dodgers.
Rafael Devers hits a game-tying HR (his 4th homer in 3 games) and the Sox win on a JD Martinez 3-run HR in 12 innings.
The Mets avoid the sweep behind Rick Porcello’s 8 K’s in 7 shutout innings in his first start with the team. They hold on 1-0 over the defending champion Nationals.
Adam Frazier had 4 hits and 2 RBI as it takes 10 innings for the Pirates to topple the Rays 7-6.
Cesar Hernandez, Carlos Santana, Jose Ramirez, and Jordan Luplow all had 3 hits each to power the Indians past the Tigers 9-5.
Neither Josh James nor Matt Andriese allow a hit until the 6th inning in Houston. Kyle Tucker’s walk-off double seals the third straight win for the Astros over the Angels.
Kyle Hendricks threw 7 scoreless innings with 6 K’s and Kris Bryant was 4-5 with 2 RBI’s in a 10-0 Cubs blowout win.
The Bombers were true to their name with 5 home runs including 2 from Kyle Higashioka in a 9-5 win over the Orioles
Luis Robert (3-4, HR, 2 RBI’s) and Tim Anderson (3-4, 4 RBI’s) continued their torrid starts to lead the White Sox 9-4 over the Royals.
ATL- LHP Grant Dayton placed on 15-Day IL, RHP Patrick Weigel called up
BOS- RHP Austin Brice placed on 15-Day IL, LHP Jeffrey Springs called up
1:05 PM: NYY @ BAL
Kyle Higashioka slammed 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI as the New York (AL) club
bested the Baltimore ballclub 9 to 5 at Camden Yards.
Higashioka had a big day against Baltimore. He bombed a two-run dinger in the
2nd inning, doubled in the 4th inning and delivered a solo blast in the 6th
inning. New York (AL) totaled 9 hits on the afternoon.
J.A. Happ(1-0) got the win allowing 5 runs in 5 and 1/3 innings. Asher
Wojciechowski(0-1) took the loss. He served up 3 gopher balls in 4 and 2/3

Rafael Devers hit a homerun and had 2 RBI as the Boston club outscored the
Toronto ballclub in 12 innings 6 to 3.
Both teams were tied at 3 runs apiece after nine innings. Boston was
victorious in the 12th inning. After an out was recorded, Andrew Benintendi
got things rolling when he drew a walk. Devers stepped up to the plate and
he lined a one-base hit. One out later, J.D. Martinez then smacked a
three-run homer. Boston had a total of 10 hits for the game.
Matt Barnes(2-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 2 innings and allowing
no runs. Brandon Workman recorded his 3rd save. The loss was charged to
Jordan Romano(0-1) in relief.
1:10 PM: DET @ CLE
WEB GEMS- Top 8th: Jose Ramirez robbed Jeimer Candelario of a base hit.
Jefry Rodriguez carried a no-hitter into the 6th inning and first baseman
Carlos Santana touched them all and had 2 RBI at Progressive Field where the
Cleveland ballclub beat the Detroit team by the score of 9 to
Rodriguez(1-0) had a solid outing for Cleveland. He allowed 2 hits and 2
walks in 6 and 2/3 innings. The right-handed Rodriguez lost a no-hitter when
Cameron Maybin homered with two outs in the 6th inning. Overall Cleveland
out-hit Detroit 17 to 5.
Ivan Nova(0-1) absorbed the loss. He got hammered, allowing 8 hits and 2
walks in 4 innings.
1:10 PM: PHI @ MIA
Vince Velasquez(1-0) and Pablo Lopez(0-1) locked horns in a pitcher’s duel
with Velasquez and the Philadelphia ballclub coming out on top of the Miami
club 2 to 0.
Philadelphia promptly took the lead in their half of the first scoring a
single run using 2 hits. That was all Velasquez needed. Philadelphia had 9
hits for the game and Miami had 6.
Hector Neris got the save, his 2nd.
1:10 PM: PIT @ TB
Right fielder Bryan Reynolds had 3 base hits and 2 RBI as the Pittsburgh club
defeated the Tampa Bay club in 10 innings by a score of 7 to 6 at Tropicana
The game was deadlocked at 6 after nine full innings. Finally, Pittsburgh
pulled the game out in the 10th inning. After two outs Jarrod Dyson drew a
walk. Dyson took second on a stolen base. Reynolds then drew a walk. Adam
Frazier followed and he laced a base-hit to load the bases. Josh Bell came
up to bat and drew a walk scoring the run. For the game Pittsburgh out-hit
Tampa Bay 15 to 7.
The victory was credited to Nick Burdi(1-0) who went 1 inning, allowing no
runs. Keone Kela gained credit for his 2nd save. Jose Alvarado(0-1) suffered
the loss in relief.
1:10 PM: STL @ CIN
WEB GEMS- Bot 1st: Harrison Bader robbed Nicholas Castellanos of an extra base hit.
Paul Dejong homered and had 3 RBI at Great American Bpk where the St. Louis
ballclub beat the Cincinnati team 4 to 3.
Carlos Martinez(1-0) pitched a fine game. He went 5 and 2/3 innings and
surrended up 4 hits and 3 walks. Both teams finished the game with 7 hits.
Martinez got relief help from Giovanny Gallegos who gained credit for his 2nd
save. Trevor Bauer(0-1) was the loser. Although losing the contest, he
whiffed 7 batters in 4 innings.
1:10 PM: WAS @ NYM
In a game for the baseball purist, Rick Porcello(1-0) and Patrick Corbin(0-1)
squared off in a tense pitching duel, New York (NL) team finally emerged
victorious over Washington club, 1 to 0.
The game’s only run was scored in the bottom of the 2nd inning. That scoring
would be all that was needed. Edwin Diaz earned the save with a perfect
ninth, his 1st save.
2:10 PM: KC @ CHW
The Chicago (AL) ballclub had an easy time of it at Guaranteed Rate Fld
defeating the Kansas City team by a score of 9 to 4.
Tim Anderson had a good day at the plate. He doubled in the 1st inning,
cracked a solo homerun in the 5th inning and delivered a base-hit scoring two
baserunners in the 6th inning. Chicago (AL) finished with 14 hits while
Kansas City ended up with 9.
Reynaldo Lopez(1-0) was the winner allowing 2 runs in 5 innings. Lopez got
help from Steve Cishek who was credited with his 1st save. Jake Junis(0-1)
was given the loss. He pitched 5 innings giving up 6 hits and 1 walk.
2:10 PM: LAA @ HOU
Josh James didn’t allow a hit until the 6th inning as the Houston club won at
Minute Maid Park in dramatic fashion over the Los Angeles(AL) club, the final
score, 3 to 2.
The game was decided in the 9th inning. After two were out Yuli Gurriel
delivered a one-base hit. Kyle Tucker came next and he doubled resulting in
a mighty exciting win for Houston and the 39,906 home town fans in
attendance. Houston had 5 hits overall, while Los Angeles(AL) had 2.
The win went to Roberto Osuna(1-0) who allowed no runs in 1 inning. The
right-handed James lost a no-hitter when David Fletcher homered with one out
in the 6th inning. Keynan Middleton(0-1) suffered the loss in relief.
4:07 PM: MIN @ OAK
45,617 fans were treated to a fine game at Oakland Coliseum as only one run
separated the combatants at game’s end. The Oakland club won by the slimmest
of margins, 3 to 2.
Jesus Luzardo(1-0) gave Oakland a solid outing. He went 6 innings allowing 6
hits and no walks. Luzardo recorded 7 strikeouts and allowed 2 gopher balls.
Minnesota had a chance in the 9th but they came up short.
Luzardo got help from Liam Hendriks who earned his 3rd save. Homer
Bailey(0-1) suffered the loss. He surrendered 4 hits and 4 walks in 6
4:10 PM: ATL @ ARI
In a two run game the Arizona club got by the Atlanta team by the score of 4
The game started off with Arizona taking the lead in the first scoring a
single run utilizing 2 base hits. For the game Arizona out-hit Atlanta 10 to
Luke Weaver(1-0) was the winner allowing 2 runs in 5 and 1/3 innings. Weaver
was helped out by Archie Bradley who recorded his 1st save. Sean
Newcomb(0-1) suffered the loss. He was unable to control the Arizona offense
and allowed 7 hits and 2 walks in 4 innings.
4:10 PM: COL @ SD
In an entertaining game at PETCO Park the final score was the San Diego team
8, the Colorado team 5.
Emilio Pagan(1-0) pitched well in relief and was credited with the victory.
He didn’t allow much, just 1 hit and no walks in 1 inning. The Colorado bats
were silent in the 9th.
Kirby Yates earned his 1st save. Carlos Estevez(0-1) was the loser in relief.
He pitched 2/3 of an inning allowing 2 hits and 3 walks.
4:10 PM: TEX @ SEA
Elvis Andrus had 3 base hits and 3 RBI and Kyle Gibson whiffed 10 batters at
T-Mobile Park as the Texas team beat the Seattle club 7 to 2.
Gibson(1-0) pitched a fine game. He went 5 and 1/3 innings allowing 5 hits
and 3 walks. Texas had 10 hits for the afternoon while Seattle had 6.
Kendall Graveman(0-1) was charged with the loss. He was unable to control the
Texas offense and allowed 7 hits and 2 walks in 4 innings.
Seattle’s manager was impressed with Gibson and his 10 strikeouts. ‘It’s
tough to generate runs if you can’t make contact with the ball.’
7:09 PM: CHC @ MIL
WEB GEMS- Bot 4th: Kyle Schwarber robbed Christian Yelich of an extra base hit.
Willson Contreras left the yard and had 3 RBI and Kyle Hendricks went 7 solid
innings as the Chicago (NL) ballclub clobbered the outmatched Milwaukee
ballclub, 10 to 0.
Chicago (NL) set the tone of the game in the first inning plating an isolated
run utilizing 2 base hits. That scoring would be all that was needed.
Chicago (NL) simply wore out the Milwaukee pitching staff, scoring in 6
Hendricks(1-0) went 7 innings allowing no runs for the win. Brett
Anderson(0-1) was the losing pitcher. He got hammered, allowing 8 hits and 3
walks in 4 and 1/3 innings.
