March 30th Highlights

The first Monday of the season is here! Only one undefeated team remains, let’s check in on the full action:

Jorge Soler goes yard 3 times and drives in 6 runs as the Royals blow out Detroit, 12-6.

The Cubs come back down 2 in the ninth before Ian Happ hits a walk-off homer to defeat the Pirates 6-5.

Rafael Devers homers again! His 5th in 4 games is not enough as Orioles edge the Red Sox 4-3.

The Mets barely hang on 2-1 over the Phillies. Steven Matz goes 6 strong innings with no runs and 6 K’s. Edwin Diaz gives up a run but strands runners at 2nd and 3rd for the save.

Tampa Bay hits 5 homers with 2 from Austin Meadows to take down the Yankees 7-2.

The Rockies’ Trevor Story hits two homers and one in the 9th to break the tie handing the Dodgers their first loss of the season.

Evan White hits his first Major League home run as Seattle beats the Twins 6-5 in a battle between two previously win-less teams.

The Padres’ Dinelson Lamet outduels Felix Hernandez in his Braves debut as San Diego takes home the 1-0 victory.

BOS- LHP Jeffrey Springs sent down, LHP Brian Johnson called up
NYY- OF Giancarlo Stanton placed on 10-Day IL, OF Clint Frazier called up

1:10 PM: KC @ DET

Jorge Soler blasted 3 homeruns and had 6 RBI at Comerica Park where the Kansas
City team beat the Detroit ballclub by the score of 12 to 6.
 
Soler had a big day with his bat.  He laced a one-base hit plating a run in
the 1st inning, lofted a three-run 'big-fly' in the 2nd inning, lofted a
solo-blast 'downtown' in the 7th inning and hit a bases-empty home run in the
9th inning.  Offensively, Kansas City was a juggernaut.  They scored in 6
separate innings.  
 
The win went to Mike Montgomery(1-0) who allowed 2 runs in 5 innings. Daniel
Norris(0-1) was the loser.  He was not very effective, surrendering 7 runs in
2 innings.  
 
'I was really seeing the ball today,' Soler said 'I wish it was always this
easy.'

4:10 PM: PIT @ CHC

WEB GEMS- Bot 8th: Kevin Kramer robbed Ian Happ of an extra base hit.
 
The Chicago (NL) club edged the Pittsburgh club in 10 innings at Wrigley Field
by the score of 6 to 5.
 
Both teams had scored 5 runs after nine full innings.  Chicago (NL) won the
hard fought contest in the 10th inning.  Ian Happ blasted a solo shot making
Chicago (NL) victorious to the delight of the the home town crowd.  Chicago
(NL) had 14 hits for the game and Pittsburgh had 8.  
 
The winning pitcher was Rex Brothers(1-0) who allowed no runs in 1 inning.
Nick Burdi(1-1) suffered the loss in relief.  He was unable to retire a
batter giving up 1 hit and no walks.
 

6:10 PM: CHW @ CLE

WEB GEMS- Top 9th: Jake Bauers robbed Nomar Mazara of an extra base hit.
 
First baseman Carlos Santana had 3 base hits and 2 RBI as the Cleveland club
outscored the Chicago (AL) team 12 to 6.
 
Zach Plesac(1-0) delivered a fine performance for Cleveland.  He went 6
innings and surrended up 2 hits and 2 walks.  Plesac chalked up 8 strikeouts.
Chicago (AL) was out-hit by Cleveland, 15 hits to 8.  
 
Dylan Cease(0-1) ended up with the loss.  He was knocked around pretty good,
giving up 6 runs in 3 and 2/3 innings.

6:35 PM: BOS @ BAL

One run was the difference at Camden Yards as the Baltimore club defeated the
Boston team 4 to 3.
 
Wade Leblanc(1-0) pitched a fine game.  He surrendered 4 hits and 1 walk in 6
innings and gave up 2 homeruns.  For the game Baltimore out-hit Boston 10 to
6.  
 
Leblanc got help from Mychal Givens who earned his 2nd save.  Brian
Johnson(0-1) was hit with the loss.  He was touched for 3 homeruns in his 3
and 2/3 innings of work.  
 

6:40 PM: WAS @ MIA

Jonathan Villar knocked 2 homeruns as the Miami team bested the Washington
team 3 to 1 at Marlins Park.
 
The Miami fans enjoyed the offense provided by Villar.  He lofted a solo-blast
'downtown' in the 1st inning, hit a bases-empty home run in the 2nd inning
and laced a base-hit in the 8th inning.  The pitchers took over after the 4th
inning as neither team was able to score again.  
 
The victory went to Jordan Yamamoto(1-0) who went 7 innings, allowing 1 run.
Yamamoto was helped out by Brandon Kintzler who recorded his 2nd save.
Anibal Sanchez(0-1) was tagged with the loss.  
 
 

7:07 PM: CIN @ TOR

The Cincinnati club cruised to a 7 to 2 victory over the Toronto club at
Rogers Centre.
 
Toronto fell behind quickly as the Cincinnati offense came through in the
first inning when they came up with 2 runs on 2 hits.  The highlight belonged
to Eugenio Suarez who deflated the mood of the partisan fans when he cleared
the fences for a two-run home run.  Cincinnati had a total of 11 hits for the
game.  
 
The victory was credited to Anthony Desclafani(1-0) who went 5 innings,
allowing 1 run. Trent Thornton(0-1) was the losing pitcher.  He was hit hard
and gave up 7 hits and 2 walks in 4 innings.  
 
 

7:10 PM: NYY @ TB

Designated hitter Austin Meadows ripped 2 homeruns at Tropicana Field as the
Tampa Bay club beat the New York (AL) ballclub 7 to 2.
 
In the bottom of the 5th inning Tampa Bay went on top for good scoring 2 runs
on 2 base hits.  After two were out Brandon Lowe jump-started the scoring
when he hit a bases-empty home run.  Meadows followed next and he lofted a
solo-blast 'downtown'.  Tampa Bay totaled 10 hits on the night.  
 
The win was credited to Yonny Chirinos(1-0) who went 5 innings allowing 2
runs. Jordan Montgomery(0-1) took the loss.  He allowed 3 homeruns in 5
innings of work.  

7:10 PM: PHI @ NYM

WEB GEMS- Bot 3rd: Didi Gregorius robbed Michael Conforto of a base hit.
 
At Citi Field, the New York (NL) fans witnessed a great pitcher's duel.
Steven Matz(1-0) finally bested his Philadelphia opposite, Zach Eflin(0-1),
by the score of 2 to 1.
 
New York (NL) set the tone of the game in the first inning scoring one runner.
Amed Rosario reached on an error.  Jeff McNeil was next to bat, but he was a
strikeout victim.  Pete Alonso then hit a deep fly scoring the run.
Philadelphia threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short.  
 
Edwin Diaz recorded his 2nd save.  Eflin was given the loss.  When questioned
about the loss, Philadelphia's manager said, 'The fans got to see an exciting
game out there tonight.  Unfortunately, we couldn't get it done this time.
Next time, though, we'll be the clubhouse with all the smiles.'
 

7:40 PM: STL @ MIL

Left fielder Christian Yelich had 2 base hits as the Milwaukee team topped the
St. Louis ballclub in 10 innings by a score of 3 to 2 at Miller Park.
 
The score was tied at 2 after nine.  Milwaukee won the game in the 10th
inning.  Lorenzo Cain drew a walk.  Milwaukee's manager then called for a
steal which was successful.  After an out was recorded, Yelich was walked
intentionally.  Ryan Braun was up next and he was walked intentionally to
load the bases.  Manny Pina came to the plate and drew a walk giving
Milwaukee the win and sending the home town fans into a frenzy.  Milwaukee
had a total of 8 hits for the game.  
 
The win was credited to Josh Hader(1-0) who went 2 innings allowing no runs.
Tyler Webb(0-1) was the losing pitcher in relief.  
 
 

9:40 PM: SF @ ARI

At Chase Field, the Arizona fans witnessed a great pitcher's duel.  Zac
Gallen(1-0) finally bested his San Francisco opposite, Drew Smyly(0-1), by
the score of 3 to 0.
 
Gallen pitched a fine game.  He surrendered 4 hits and 3 walks in 7 innings.
Neither team managed to score after the 3rd inning.  
 
Archie Bradley preserved the game for Gallen, recording his his 2nd save.
Smyly ended up with the loss.  He gave up 3 runs and 5 hits in 6 innings.
 

10:07 PM: HOU @ OAK

WEB GEMS- Bot 2nd: Martin Maldonado blocked the plate, saving a run!
 
George Springer had 4 hits and 2 RBI as the Houston ballclub bested the
Oakland ballclub 6 to 2 at Oakland Coliseum.
 
Springer had a big day against Oakland.  He bombed a two-run dinger in the 3rd
inning, doubled in the 5th inning, delivered a base-hit in the 7th inning and
slapped a single in the 9th inning.  Houston had 15 hits for the night while
Oakland had 7.  
 
The win went to Austin Pruitt(1-0) who allowed 1 run in 6 innings. A.J.
Puk(0-1) took the loss.  He pitched 5 innings and surrendered 7 hits and 1
walk.
 

10:10 PM: ATL @ SD

Dinelson Lamet(1-0) and Felix Hernandez(0-1) dueled it out with Lamet and the
San Diego club coming out on top of the Atlanta club by the score of 1 to
0.
 
Lamet had a solid outing for San Diego.  He was reached for 3 hits and 3 walks
in 6 innings.  Atlanta went down quietly in the 9th.  
 
Kirby Yates recorded the save, his 2nd.
 

10:10 PM: COL @ LAD

Trevor Story rocketed 2 homeruns and scored 3 times as the Colorado ballclub
outscored the Los Angeles(NL) ballclub 6 to 5.
 
The deciding run was scored by Colorado in the top of the 9th.  After two outs
Story cracked a solo homerun.  Colorado totaled 10 hits on the night.
 
Scott Oberg(1-0) went 1 inning allowing no runs for the win. Wade Davis earned
his 1st save.  Kenley Jansen(0-1) was charged with the loss in relief.  

10:10 PM: MIN @ SEA
WEB GEMS- Top 7th: Dan Altavilla robbed Josh Donaldson of a base hit.

The Seattle ballclub edged the Minnesota team at T-Mobile Park by the score of
6 to 5.

Seattle plated all the runs they needed in the 5th inning when they came up
with 6 runs on 5 hits. The highlight belonged to Dan Vogelbach who
electrified T-Mobile Park when he smacked a three-run homer. Minnesota was
out-hit by Seattle, 9 hits to 4.

Taijuan Walker(1-0) went 5 innings allowing no runs for the victory. Matt
Magill recorded his 1st save. Jhoulys Chacin(0-1) was the loser. He allowed
5 hits and 1 walk in 4 innings.
