On October 5, 1908 — Defeating Detroit, 6-1, Ed Walsh wins his 40th game of the season, establishing a White Sox single-season record. ‘Big Ed,’ a right-hander from Meriden, Connecticut, finishes his 14-year Hall of Fame tenure with a 195-126 record and sets the all-time career ERA mark with an earned run average of 1.82.
