Notable Events and Chronology for Dick Howser Career

Biography

SS/Coach/Manager Dick Howser was born may 14 in 1936

Dick had his best season as a rookie in 1961 (with the Kansas City Athletics) when he had 171 hits, 108 runs, 37 SB, 92 BB, .280 BA, & .377 OBP, finishing runner-up to the AL Rookie of the Year Award (to Boston Red Sox pitcher Don Schwall) and making his only All-Star team (twice in ’61). Howser is best known for his years as a MLB manager. He managed the New York Yankees to the AL East Division title in 1980, winning 103 games. However, the Yanks were swept in the ALCS by the Kansas City Royals and Yankees owner George Steinbrenner fired Howser after the playoff loss. Dick then became the Royals manager in 1981 and led them to their first World Series title in 1985. He contracted a brain tumor in 1986 and tragically died in 1987 at the age of 51. The Royals retired his uniform #10 and he is in their team’s Hall of Fame.

In his 8-year playing career (1961-68), Dick had 617 hits, 105 SB, .248 BA, & .346 OBP.
