BOSTON (AP) — Fred Lynn has done a lot In his short major-league career.

He was the American League’s most valuable player and rookie of the year in 1975 and has led the league in slugging percentage twice and in batting last year, when he hit .333. But he never had hit for the cycle. Until Tuesday night.

Lynn set up a run with a double in the first inning, drove in two with a homer in the fourth, pushed across another with a single in the sixth, and sent home still another with a triple in the eighth. All that lifted his batting average to .324 and carried the Boston Red Sox to a come-from-behind 10-5 victory over the Minnesota Twins.

“It usually happens two or three times a year when you get really hot,” Lynn said. “I’m seeing the ball really well.” He had been in a slump until erupting for three hits in Texas last Wednesday. In his last five games, he has 13 hits, three homers and 10 RBI.

“There’s no physical adjustments at all. It’s your frame of mind,” he said. “I have great concentration right now.”

Lynn wasn’t the only hero for the Red Sox. Carl Yastrzemski belted a two-run homer in the third that cut the Twins’ lead to 4-3. It was his third of the season and 407th of his career, tying him with Duke Snider for 17th place on the all-time homer list.

And Steve Renko cave up no earned runs and four hits Tn 5 23 innings to gain his second win in as many decisions. He took over in the second for Bruce Hurst after the Twins touched the rookie for four runs in that inning.

“I had a good fastball tonight. I also used the changeup and the slider,” Renko said. “We played better defense tonight. Bruce didn’t pitch well but he had better stuff tonight in the bullpen than I’ve seen all year.” ‘‘You’re talking about one of my all-time favorites,” Minnesota Manager Gene Mauch said in response to a question about Renko “Tonight I didn’t appreciate his worth a damn, though ’

The Red Sox also got strong relief work from Tom Burgmeier. He pitched two perfect innings to earn his fifth save. John Verhoeven, who yielded Lynn’s, homer that gave the Red Sox a 6-5 lead, took the loss and is 04.
