George Brett extend his hitting streak to 29 games

On August 17, 1980, future Hall of Famer George Brett goes 4-for-4 with five RBI to lift his batting average to .401, and extend his hitting streak to 29 games in the Royals’ 8-3 victory over Toronto. The Kansas City third baseman receives a standing ovation from the Royals Stadium crowd of 30,693 fans, after blasting a bases-clearing double in the eighth inning.

Brett had doubled in the go-ahead runs in the 7th off Jim Clancy to give KC a 5-3 lead. Brett’s 8th inning shot was an opposite-field double off Mike Barlow, scoring longtime teammates – UL Washington, Amos Otis, and John Wathan. Paul Splittorff (9-8) will pick up the win, Clancy (11-9) will drop to 11-9 and Dan Quisenberry saves his 25th going the final 2 innings.
