2004 – After a groundskeeper finds a grenade in the Wrigley Field turf, police bomb and arson investigators are called to evaluate the discovery. The rusty, hollowed-out shell turns out to be harmless and its origins remain a mystery.
Opening Day highlights include the Baltimore Orioles’ Sammy Sosa and Rafael Palmeiro who become the first pair of teammates to have at least 500 career home runs apiece. Sosa opens the season with 574 career HR and Palmeiro 551.

The A’s beat the Angels, 1 – 0, in the longest shutout in American League history – 20 innings. Vida Blue strikes out 17 batters in 11 innings for the A’s, while the Angels’ Billy Cowanties a major-league record by fanning six times. Both teams combine for 43 strikeouts, a new major-league record for incompetence (or pitching dominance, depending on one’s perspective).

2015 – Culiacan earns a spot in the 2015 Caribbean Series finals with a 5 – 4 win over the Gigantes del Cibao. Terance Marin pitches 6 innings and Ali Solis drives in two runs in the win, while Elih Villanueva is tagged with the loss. In the other semi-final, Pinar del Río upsets Anzoátegui, heretofore unbeaten, 8 – 4, to capture the other spot in the finals. Cuban national team veteran Frederich Cepeda goes 4-for-5 with a triple and double and drives in five runs.
