On February 16, 1961, Hall of Famer Clarence “Dazzy” Vance dies at the age of 69. Vance went 197-140 over a 16-year career. Vance led the National League in wins in 1924 and ’25 with the Brooklyn Dodgers.
A series of Midsummer Classic games is proposed by William Veeck, president of the Cubs. Although the idea receives some support, it will be 64 years before a team from the American League plays a club from the National League during the regular season.

The Red Sox’s last-minute offer falls short and The Rocket’s flirtation with the Yankees comes to naught. However, the Sox are successful in retaining Tim Naehring, who was minutes away from signing with Cleveland.

For the 23rd time this season, Diamondback fireballer Randy Johnson strikes out at least 10 batters to tie Nolan Ryan’s 1973 major league record for the most double-digit strikeout games in a season. The tall left-hander whiffs 11 Padres in seven innings in a 5 – 3 victory to bring his season-ending total to 364, which ranks fourth all-time.

One day after the other top-rank free agent remaining on the market, Craig Kimbrel, has found a home, it is Dallas Keuchel’s turn to come to an agreement with a team. According to reports, he will sign a one-year contract with the Braves for $13 million, now that compensation in the form of a pick in the amateur draft is off the table.
