On September 14, 1955 — Herb Score whiffs nine batters in the Indians’ 3-2 loss to the Senators at Griffith Stadium to establish a new rookie record for strikeouts in a season, surpassing Grover Cleveland Alexander’s mark of 227 strikeouts set in 1911. The American League Rookie of the Year will finish the campaign with 245 punch outs, a total which will not be topped until 1985 when Mets right-hander Dwight Gooden strikes out 251 batters.
