July 3,1922 nicknamed “ Stretch” And “ Steeple”.American Baseball and Basketball Player. He would play in MLB First Base and NBA.Born and raised in St. Paul, Minnesota. He lived three blocks from Lexington Park home of American Association
St. Paul Saints. His Father was a member of the St. Paul Municipal Baseball Board. Howie grew up going to games with his Dad. In 1940 he graduated from high school and attended Hamline University near his home. As a sophomore he lead his Basketball team to the NAIB Championship. While in College he would play Minor League
Baseball. He would be recruited by the Saints of the American Association, he would sign with Grand Fork Chiefs and back up to the Saints in 1942 . While playing with the Saints he is noticed by Branch Rickey GM for the Brooklyn Dodgers and 1943 he is called up to the MLB Brooklyn.Due to his 6ft 6 inches he was deferred from serving
In World War Two. Howie would play with the Dodgers until 1947. He would be traded to Philadelphia Phillies in 1947 – 48 to make room at first base for Jackie Robinson . Howie would end Baseball with the Cincinnati Reds In 1948.
His NBA Career spanned 1948-1952 He would play off season to Baseball. He first played for the Anderson Packers of the NBL In 1946 and was with the team as a Player/ Coach in their move to the NBA 1949-50. He would be traded Ft. Wayne Pistons . He later played with the Minneapolis Lakers Winning an NBA Championship In 1952.
Howie Schultz would live to be 87 years old.
