On July 2, 1993 — In a pregame ceremony at the ballpark, Royals Stadium is officially renamed to honor Ewing M. Kauffman, the team’s owner since the club’s inception in 1968. The 77 year-old philanthropist, who humbly discouraged the name change, will die within a month.
