Rollie Fingers wins first major league start, shuts out the Minnesota Twins, 7 – 0

On April 22, 1969 — In his first major league start, Rollie Fingers of the Oakland Athletics shuts out the Minnesota Twins, 7 – 0, at Metropolitan Stadium, stopping Minnesota’s seven-game winning streak.

Fingers’ whitewash, which snapped a seven-game Minnesota win streak, came after three other starting chances were washed out. After the game the youngster admitted he feared the Twins lineup. “This is a tough group of hitters.” he explained. “I know other teams in this league which don’t have nearly as many good hitters as the Twins.”

WHEN ASKED WHO HE feared the most, Fingers answered without hesitation, “Oliva. no doubt about it, Tony Oliva.” At the end of the game. There was no doubt about it. The rookie had retired the two-time American League batting champion three times while yielding only a harmless single.

Minnesota Manager, Billy Martin was tossed in the 4th inning for arguing balls and strikes.
