May 24, 1940 – In the first night game at the Polo Grounds, New York Giants whip Casey Stengel’s Boston Bees 8-1 behind three New York dingers from Jo-Jo Moore, Billy Jurges, and Al Glossop. Giants hurler Harry Gumbert got the complete-game win, The Manhattan ballpark’s $125,000 lighting system works well, allowing the 22,260 patrons attending the game to follow the nocturnal contest without any difficulties.
