On July 22, 1954 — In the top of the ninth inning, attempting to put more pop in the lineup, Yankee skipper Casey Stengel, shifts center fielder Mickey Mantle to shortstop to replace weak-hitting Willy Miranda which allows pinch-hitter Hank Bauer to stay in the game in right field, moving Irv Noren to center field to take the Mick’s place in the outfield. The move proves unnecessary when the ‘Commerce Comet’ hits a walk-off homer in the bottom of the tenth, giving the Yankees a 4-3 victory over Chicago.
