On August 21, 1961 —  In their first appearance in Boston since moving to Milwaukee, the Braves defeat the Red Sox, 4 – 1. Warren Spahn pitches the first inning, striking out rookies Chuck Schilling and Carl Yastrzemski. The exhibition gameis for the benefit of the Jimmy Fund.

RECAP –
A crowd of 19,773 went through the rain and raised between $50,000 and $60,000 for the Jimmy Fund, in welcoming the Braves back to Boston for at least one night. They booed the Red Sox and cheered the Braves who defeated their once cross-town rivals 4-1. The crowd saw Braves pitchers hold the Red Sox to just one hit thru the first six innings.

Before the game Warren Spahn received a Certificate of Merit from Cardinal Cushing, and then he blinded the Red Sox only 24 hours after winning his 302nd career game. Spahn pitched the first inning and struck out Chuck Schilling, made Pete Runnels ground out, and struck out Carl Yastrzemski.

When Spahn got Yaz to finish a three-up, three-down inning, there was another ovation as he strode to the dugout.

Spahn was followed by Lew Burdette, Carlton Willey, Don McMahon, Tony Cloninger, Bob Hendley and Johnny Antonelli.

Galen Cisco started for the Red Sox and in the first 4 2/3 innings gave up nine hits and four runs. Then he held the Braves hitless until the ninth inning.

The Braves got all their runs in the 3rd inning. Frank Bolling led off and Cisco hit him with a pitch. Eddie Mathews bounced a ball off the left field wall, moving Bolling to third. Hank Aaron’s sacrifice fly brought Bolling home with the first run. With two down, Frank Thomas scored Mathews with a single to left and moved to second on a single by Joe Torre. Roy McMillan grounded to Malzone, but in trying to get the force at second, Chuck Schilling stumbled and missed the bag. So the bases were loaded and Lew Burdette stayed in to bat. He drove in two more runs with a single to right and the Braves led 4-0.

Cisco proceeded to pitch hitless ball thru the eight inning. Arnold Early relieved him in the ninth and put the Braves down silently.
