Jackie Robinson slides home

June 1, 1949 – Home plate umpire Scotty Robb calls Jackie Robinson safe as the Brooklyn Dodgers to take on the St Louis Cardinals at Ebbets Field.
Jackie scored all the way from 1st on Gil Hodges hit to center field in the 3rd inning. The throwback to the infield eluded the Cards 1st baseman Nippy Jones who was trying to make an infield cut-off. Jones made it over to cover unoccupied home plate and took 3rd baseman’s Eddie Kazak’s throw and put the tag on Robinson. St Louis Cardinals pitcher Alpha Brazle is backing up the play.
Cardinals catcher Del Rice will argue the play and end up pushing Robb. Rice will be ejected from the game and be fined $50 and suspended for 5 days.
