Jim Bunning, Earl Weaver, Bill Foster, and Ned Hanlon are inducted into baseball’s Hall of Fame.

On August 4, 1996, Earl Weaver, who guided the Orioles to a World Series title in 1970, and 1,480 wins in 18 seasons, was inducted into the Hall of Fame, along with Jim Bunning, and Negro League star Bill Foster, and Ned Hanlon.

Earl Weaver managed the Orioles with intensity, flair, and acerbic wit for 17 seasons. He fashioned an impressive .583 winning percentage bolstered by five 100-win seasons (1969-1971 and 1979-1980). Known for his innovative managerial style and his colorful confrontations with the men in blue, the Earl of Baltimore won 1,480 games, six American League East titles, four pennants and the 1970 World Series.

Displaying a remarkable consistency during his 17-year career, Jim Bunning became the second pitcher to record 100 wins and 1,000 strikeouts in both the American and National Leagues. He also threw no-hitters in both leagues, including a perfect game on Father’s Day 1964. Accumulated 224 career wins as a seven-time All-Star selection, Bunning was also a leading figure in the founding of the player’s union and later served Kentucky as a United States Senator.

A player, manager, owner, commissioner and unsurpassed visionary, Rube Foster was one of baseball’s greatest Renaissance men. In his youth, Foster was a star pitcher of the dead ball era, and later as owner-manager of the Chicago American Giants, the burly Texan instilled in his players the daring, aggressive, yet disciplined style of play for which the Negro leagues became famous. In 1920, he founded the first successful Negro league, the Negro National League, which flourished throughout the decade.
