Jimmy Piersall celebrates his 100th career home run by running the bases backward

 

 

On June 23, 1963, New York Mets’ outfielder Jimmy Piersall celebrates his 100th career home run by running in the correct order, but bases backward. Piersall’s homerun came in the bottom of the 5th when he lead off the inning, it was his first National League homerun. The stunt angers Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Dallas Green and Commissioner Ford Frick. The Mets will hand Jimmy his walking papers two days later by Casey Stengel. The Mets’ outfielder, who thought of the stunt after being disappointed by the lack of attention Duke Snider’s 400th round-tripper received.
