Lewis traded upon returning from World War I

On December 18, 1918 — Duffy Lewis returns from the military, and is traded by the Boston Red Sox to the New York Yankees.

He goes along with front-line pitchers Ernie Shore and Dutch Leonard for P Ray “Slim” Caldwell, Slim Love, Roxy Walters, Frank Gilhooley, and $15,000. The Tigers had turned down a deal for Dutch Leonard on the 16th. The Boston Post reports that “it will take a lot to convince Boston fans that they got the best of this one.”

Shore, the once promising right-hander, who missed the entire season last year due to military service, will retire after two seasons with New York, compiling a meager 7-10 record.

Lewis, had received the day before the trade an ensign’s gold stripe to become the only big-leaguer to earn a Navy commission serving World War I
