Lou Brock of the St. Louis Cardinals becomes the king of the stolen base
On August 29, 1977 — At Jack Murphy Stadium, 39-year-old Cardinals outfielder Lou Brock swipes his 893rd bag, breaking Ty Cobb’s 49-year-old major league career record for stolen bases. The Georgia Peach had established the mark in 1928 as a member of the Philadelphia A’s at the age of 41.
Brock walked in the first inning and wasted no time stealing his 27th base of the year and tied Ty Cobb’s all-time record. Brock will again reach base on a double in the 5th, but he will not attempt a steal, in the 7th inning, he reaches base on a fielder’s choice off starter Dave Freisleben. Brock wastes little time swiping a second base and setting the all-time record for career stolen bases.
The Cardinals up 3-2 at the time will lose 4-3 when Mike Ivie hits a 2-run home run in the bottom of the 8th, off Al Hrabosky. Rollie Fingers will close out the game for the Padres.
