World Series – Pittsburgh Pirates NL over Washington Nationals (AL) AL 4 games to 3

1925,Offense remained up in 1925 as 14 players collected at least 200 hits. This group was paced by National League Triple Crown winner Rogers Hornsby and his .403 average, 39 homers, and 143 runs batted in. Three Detroit hitters batted at least .370 including Harry Heilmann’s league leading .393 average. The Philadelphia Athletics debuted Jimmie Foxx, Mickey Cochrane, and Lefty Grove in 1925, but finished a distant second to a Washington Senators team led by 20-game winners Walter Johnson and Stan Coveleski. The Senators faced the Pittsburgh Pirates in the World Series and led three games to one, but the Bucs came back to win the final three contests to win the 1925 championship. The Pirates featured the baseball best offense with all eight regulars batting at least .298 and six players scoring at least 85 runs. Three Yankees belted at least 20 home runs but the team battled through a miserable year and finished seventh. Future Hall of Famers Tris Speaker and Eddie Collins each picked up hit number 3000 in the spring of 1925.

The Cleveland Indians open the season with a 21 – 14 victory over the St. Louis Browns. The Indians score 12 runs in the 8th inning when the Browns make five errors. Browns first baseman George Sisler has four errors in the game, and the Indians’ 21 runs set a major league record for the most runs scored by one club on Opening Day.

In the first regular-season Chicago Cubs game to be broadcast on the radio, Quin Ryan announces the contest from the grandstand roof for WGN.

April 17, 1925

Babe Ruth undergoes an operation for an intestinal abscess at St. Vincent’s Hospital, where he will remain for six weeks

April 18, 1925

Brooklyn Robins owner Charles Ebbets dies of a heart attack at his Waldorf-Astoria Hotel apartment at the age of 64. Later in the day, his team opens the home season losing to the New York Giants at Ebbets Field, 7 – 0.

April 22, 1925

In their home opener against Cincinnati at Sportsman’s Park, Branch Rickey’s Cardinals collect 12 hits in the first frame to establish a National League mark. The batting barrage accounts for 11 runs scoring in the inning en route to the Redbirds’ 12-3 rout of the Reds.

4/24/1925: Phillie Heinie Sand led off the bottom of the second inning against the Dodgers by hitting a Dazzy Vance pitch into the left field bleachers. Unfortunately for Sand the ball caromed back onto the playing field. He was awarded a double for his efforts.

May 1, 1925

Seventeen year-old Jimmie Foxx pinch-hits a single in his first major league at-bat in the A’s 9-4 loss to Washington at Griffith Stadium. The future Hall of Famer will finish his 20-year career with a .325 life-time batting average.

Everett Scott of the New York Yankees is benched, ending his streak of 1,307 consecutive games played that started in 1918 while playing for the Boston Red Sox. Scott, who gives way to Pee Wee Wanninger at shortstop, has the longest playing streak to that point, but his record will be broken by Lou Gehrig.

Behind Jesse Barnes, the Braves beat the visiting Cubs, 2 – 1, in 11 innings. Dave Harris’s game-ending homer in the 11th wins it.

Ray Schalk holds on to a ball dropped 460 feet from the top of the Tribune Tower in Chicago.

5/16/1925: With the Yankees playing in Detroit, Earle Combs hit a solo homer into the right field bleachers off Ed Wells to lead off the top of the ninth inning. Wells had just entered the game. However, with two out in the bottom of the frame, home plate umpire Brick Owens stopped the game due to the weather conditions, since there lightning and thunder in the area and the sky had grown dark due to the storm. Combs lost what would have been his first major league dinger to the poor conditions. Eleven other batters’ statistics were affected by the loss of the ninth inning.

At League Park, Tris Speaker of the Cleveland Indians collects his 3,000th hit off Tom Zachary of the Washington Senators. Zachary leads Washington to a 2 – 1 victory. George Uhle is the loser.

May 20, 1925

The Cleveland Indians score six runs in the bottom of the 9th inning to beat the New York Yankees, 10 – 9. Tris Speaker scores the winning run from first base on a single.

A’s rookie Mickey Cochrane hits three homers to lead Philadelphia to a 20 – 4 rout over the Browns

Behind the hitting (3 for 4) and pitching of Walter Johnson, the Senators tame the Tigers, 6 – 2. The two teams combine for nine double plays, setting a record (since tied) for a nine-inning game. The Reds and Braves will turn a record 10 double plays in 12 innings on June 7th.

The A’s acquire P George Blaeholder, who has won 10 or more games in each of the last seven seasons, from the Browns for Ed Coleman and Sugar Cain. Blaeholder had one of the highest salaries on the cash-poor Browns.

Cincinnati Reds pitcher Pete Donohue hit a home run and four singles to beat the Philadelphia Phillies, 11 – 2.

The Cardinals trade C Mike Gonzalez and infielder Howard Freigau to the Cubs for catcher Bob O’Farrell. O’Farrell‚ who suffered a fractured skull from a foul tip‚ played just 71 games in 1924 and lost his job to Gabby Hartnett. But O’Farrell will have a banner year for the Cards‚ hitting .293 and catching 146 games‚ and then take over as manager in 1927. Freigau will hit .307 for the year.

In Chicago, Tiger outfielder Ty Cobb becomes the first player to collect 1,000 career extra-base hits when he doubles in Detroit’s 8-1 win over the White Sox. The ‘Georgia Peach,’ who surpassed Honus Wagner’s record of 993 earlier in the season, will finish his 24-year major league career with 1,139.

May 30, 1925

Rogers Hornsby is named manager of the St. Louis Cardinals, replacing Branch Rickey, who remains as general manager. Hornsby will be the only player-manager to win the Triple Crown, which he does by topping a .400 batting average for the third time in four years, hitting .403 with 39 home runs and 143 RBI. Hornsby assumes his new position halfway through a twin bill in Forbes Field, both ends of which are won by the World Series-bound Bucs, and each of which feature opposite field home runs from Rajah.

1925 – The Cincinnati Reds and Boston Braves turn five double plays each in a 12-inning game for a major league record.

Four days after his average tops .400‚ Rogers Hornsby buys 1‚167 shares in the Cardinals at $42.85 a share. Hornsby pays $5‚000 in cash and borrows the rest from the bank with owner Sam Breadon endorsing his note. Breadon retains the right to buy back the stock at 6% interest.

Max Carey gets two hits in both the first and eighth innings when the Pirates beat the Cardinals at Sportsman’s Park, 24-6. The feat will not be accomplished again until Rennie Stennett, also with Pittsburgh, collects two hits in one inning twice, the first and the fifth frames, in 1975.

Tris Speaker connects for the 658th double of his career, breaking Nap Lajoie’s career record. He will go on to set the all-time record – still standing – with 792.

A’s OF “Broadway” Bill Lamar hits in his 28th straight game; he’ll be stopped the next day, but will hit .356 on the year.

6/29/1925: Giant Travis Jackson homered to lead off the bottom of the second inning at the Polo Grounds off Bill Ryan of Boston. The game was halted later in the half-inning and then cancelled by Umpire Bill Klem because of the field conditions after a heavy rain.

Milt Stock sets a National League mark by having his fourth consecutive four-hit game, going 16-for-23 during the span to compile a .696 batting average. The 31 year-old second baseman’s offensive output, which includes three singles and a triple, helps the Robins beat the Giants at Ebbets Field, 6-3.

7/9/1925: St. Louis Brown player-manager George Sisler homered into the right field bleachers at home off the Yankees’ Herb Pennock. The blow came in the first inning with one man on base. The game was rained out in the fourth inning.

July 11, 1925

At Sportsman’s Park, George Sisler becomes a one-man wrecking crew when he comes to the plate with the bases loaded in back-to-back frames in the Browns’ 10-5 victory over Washington. The St. Louis first baseman drives in seven runs in two innings, tripling with the bases jammed in the third and hitting a grand slam in the fourth.

The Philadelphia A’s go back into the lead with a sweep over the Chicago White Sox, 9 – 7 and 11 – 5.

7/15/1925: Tommy Griffith of the Cubs homered off Johnny Couch in Philadelphia with one out and no one on in the seventh inning. The bottom of that inning was not completed and the game called because of rain so the score reverted back to the previous inning and Griffith’s home run was eliminated.

Washington veteran Stan Coveleski wins his 12th straight to keep the Senators near the top. He will have his finest year at 20-5 and the American League’s best ERA, 2.84.

1925 – The Yankees buy SS Leo Durocher from Hartford (Eastern League).

7/22/1925: In a game at Philadelphia both the Phillies’ Lew Fonseca and the Pirates’ Pie Traynor lost homers to the rain. Fonseca hit a solo shot off Vic Aldridge in the second inning. Traynor’s blast came in the third with a man aboard. The game was called in the bottom of the fifth with the Bucs ahead 7-3.

Lou Gehrig belts first Grand Slam

1925 – The A’s move back into first place with a 5 – 4 win over the Red Sox and an assist from Lou Gehrig, who hits the first of his major league-record 23 grand slams to beat Firpo Marberry and the Senators, 11 – 7. A Pittsburgh win and Giants split with the Phils lifts the Pirates back on top.

1925 – The White Sox stop Stan Coveleski’s winning streak at 13, beating Washington, 11 – 1.

The Yankees buy Tony Lazzeri from the Pacific Coast League for spring delivery. Lazzeri will hit 60 home runs with 222 RBI at Salt Lake City and earn the nickname “Poosh-em-up” from his legion of Italian admirers.

8/5/1925: Tony Kaufmann of the Cubs and Russ Wrightstone of the Phillies each hit balls into the left field bleachers at Wrigley Field which were undergoing destruction at the time. According to the ground rules, each player was credited with a double.

1925 – The 2nd-place Giants make two deals to help in the pennant race. Hack Wilson goes to Toledo for Earl Webb‚ and Freddie Fitzsimmons is picked up from Indianapolis for cash and two players to be named later. Fat Freddie will be a fine addition‚ but Webb will soon be back in the minors. Wilson‚ sent to Toledo for seasoning‚ will be left unprotected by the Giants’ front office‚ and the Cubs will swipe the fireplug slugger.

8/11/1925 – The Braves were in Chicago playing the Cubs. The lineup showed Les Mann hitting fifth, Andy High sixth and Gus Felix seventh. In the top of the first inning, there was one out, one run scored and runners on first and second after four hitters had come to the plate. However, Felix (seventh) strode to the plate in Mann’s place (fifth) and walked to load the bases. High then singled home two runs and Mann ended the inning by grounding into a double play. All three of those players batted out of turn and the Cubs could have spoken up multiple times about the situation. Two of the runs could have been eliminated had they protested to the umpires. Boston went on to win the game, 9-2.

August 15, 1925

1925 – Little Dickie Kerr, the southpaw who won two games for the White Sox in the 1919 World Series, makes his first major league appearance since 1921. He has been playing semipro ball rather than accept Charles Comiskey’s salary offer. When he relieves Red Faber in the 3rd inning against the Tigers, play is stopped while admirers present him with a floral horseshoe. In two innings, he gives up three hits and walks two. The White Sox go on to win, 12 – 5.

1925 – The Phils finally solve Reds righthander Pete Donohue, 5 – 4, after losing to him 20 straight times.

August 22, 1925

1925 – After a disastrous western trip, the Giants trail the Pirates by three as the leaders come to the Polo Grounds for a 5-game series. Before crowds of more than 50,000 at two weekend doubleheaders, the Pirates take three out of 4. On Monday they beat Wayland Dean, 9 – 2, and the National League race is over. When the Giants go west again, John McGraw will stay home. The Pirates boast a team batting average of .307 and a deep pitching staff of five pitchers winning 15 to 19 games.

1925 – Although the Baker Bowl is considered a bandbox by some, the aggressive Kiki Cuyler of the Pirates hits two inside-the-park home runs there in a victory over the Phils.

Detroit Tigers hold an honorary dinner for longtime star Ty Cobb

After a night on the town, Babe Ruth shows up late for batting practice. Miller Huggins suspends Ruth and slaps a $5,000 fine on him for disobeying orders on the field and team rules off the field. In the showdown between the Bambino and the tiny manager, Jake Ruppert backs up his manager. Ruth is forced to apologize before he’s reinstated nine days later. The day after his return to the lineup, Ruth will hit home run number 300.

1925 – In the first of 5 games in Washington‚ Walter Johnson gives the Senators a 7 – 3 win over the A’s. Roger Peckinpaugh drives in 3 runs for the Senators. The Senators now lead the A’s‚ who are in a 12-game losing streak‚ by 4 1/2 games.

September 2, 1925

1925 – After losing Game One by a 6 – 3 score to the Phils, the Giants unload in a nitecap, a 24 – 9 shelling. The hits keep coming – 30 to be exact in a record 58 at-bats – at the Baker Bowl. Four New Yorkers each collect four hits apiece, while a major league record-tying ten batters collect two hits each. Doc Farrell (2 for 3) who takes over for Travis Jackson at short in the 6th is the 10th. Ex-Phil Bob Meusel drives home nine runs, while rookie Fred Fitzsimmons allows 14 hits, including homers by Cy Williams, Johnny Mokanand Hal Carlson in the 8th frame. Phils starter Art Decatur is the loser.

September 3, 1925

After a recent incident on a train, when Cubs manager Rabbit Maranville anointed various passengers from a spittoon, Chicago relieves the Rabbit of the burdens of managership. Chicago hastily appoints George Gibson, former skipper of the Pirates, as manager for the remainder of the season. The Cubs were 23-30 under Maranville, and Chicago will cut the last tie when they waive the veteran in November.

September 3, 1925

The first-place Senators continue their march toward a second straight pennant with a 9 – 3 roughing up of Red Ruffing and the Red Sox. Roger Peckinpaugh leads the way, going 3 for 4 with a triple. Alex Ferguson, Yankeecastoff, is the winner. The idle A’s drop six games off the pace.

September 3, 1925

The Cardinals score five runs in the 9th to break the first-place Pirates’ 9-game win streak, winning 9 – 3. Rogers Hornsby, the majors’ leading hitter at .387, has three hits including his 37th homer of the year to pace the attack. Babe Adams, who takes over for Emil Yde in the 9th, is hammered for four hits and five runs, but the loss goes to Yde. Art Reinhart is the winner.

The second-place Giants top the Phillies, 5 – 4, on Bill Terry’s solo homer in the 10th inning. Starter Dutch Ulrich tees up the homer, losing to Art Nehf who pitches the last 6+ innings.

Walter Johnson tops Lefty Grove, 2 – 1, and goes 3 for 4, the second consecutive game he’s collected three hits

After apologizing to his teammates yesterday, Babe Ruth makes his first appearance in a week, collecting one hit in a 5 – 1 loss to the Red Sox.

September 8, 1925

In the first game of a doubleheader, Dazzy Vance tosses a one-hitter over the Phils to give Brooklyn a 1 – 0 win. The Robins complete the sweep with a 4 – 3 game two win.

In the nightcap of a doubleheader at Fenway Park, Babe Ruth belts his 300th career home run. The milestone blast is given up by southpaw Buster Ross in the Yankees’ 7-4 win over the Red Sox.

9/8/1925: Max Carey hit a drive that bounced off a grandstand seat in right field and caromed back onto the field for a triple. The blow came off Grover Cleveland Alexander to lead off the seventh inning.

Bob Meusel, Babe Ruth, and Lou Gehrig hit successive homers in the 4th inning of Game One versus the A’s, all off Dolly Gray. New York wins, 7 – 3. Then, Ruth and OF Ben Paschal hit back-to-back homers in the 4th inning of game 2, but New York loses, 5 – 4.

1925 – In Detroit’s loss to Cleveland, 3 – 1, in 13 innings in the first game of a doubleheader, Detroit’s Jackie Tavener hits a major league-record-tying three triples. Benn Karr goes the distance for the win. Detroit then takes the nitecap, 3 – 2.

Brooklyn’s Dazzy Vance narrowly misses back-to-back no-hitters over Philadelphia

In the first of two games, Cubs veteran Grover Alexander wins 3 – 0 over Boston. Boston comes back to take the second game, 8 – 6.

John Bates of Nashville (Southern Association) goes hitless ending his 46-game hitting streak. He hit .371 during the streak.

September 17, 1925

1925 – Behind hurlers Ted Wingfield and Paul Zahniser, the Red Sox shut out the Browns twice, winning 2 – 0 and 4 – 0.

At Pittsburgh, the Pirates stop the Braves, 9 – 7. Kiki Cuyler is 4 for 4 with a double and triple and two runs to start a hit streak.

1925 – In St. Louis, the Cardinals roll over Brooklyn, 15 – 3, behind Wee Willie Sherdel. In the 7th inning, the Red Birds rub it in with two steals of home, tying a major league record. It’s the last time it’s been done in the National League. Oakland will steal home twice in the 1st inning on May 28, 1980.

At Chicago, the Cubs beat the Giants, 6 – 2, behind Sheriff Blake. Taking the loss is Jack Scott, the first of 10 straight losses the Cubs will hand him.

Eppa Rixey becomes the second Reds pitcher to win 20 this season, beating the Phillies, 7 – 2. The Reds’ big three of Pete Donohue, Rixey and Dolf Luque will finish 1-2-3 in innings pitched.

The Pirates pip the Braves, 2 – 1, as Kiki Cuyler has his second straight 4-for-4 game. The two teams total 23 hits – Pittsburgh 13 – but score just three runs.

Pittsburgh OF Kiki Cuyler ties the National League record by getting his 10th consecutive hit, singling in his first two at bats, off Art Decatur and Dutch Ulrich, before he fouls out in his 3rd at bat, against the Phils’ Decatur. The Pirates win the opener, 9 – 7. In the nitecap, a 14 – 4 Pirates win, Cuyler has his 3rd 4-for-4 game in his last four outings. He clouts two homers to back Ray Kremer’s pitching. Phils utility player Bernie Friberg catches the 8th inning in the game, thus playing every position during the year; he will be featured in a Ripley’s Believe it or Not cartoon.

Washington SS Roger Peckinpaugh, a .294 hitter, is named the American League MVP with 45 points; A’s OF Al Simmons is second with 41.

With the Yankees trailing by three runs in the bottom of the tenth inning, Babe Ruth hits a Sarge Connally pitch for a game-winning home run which beats the White Sox, 6-5. The ‘Sultan of Swat’ becomes the first modern player to blast a walk-off homer with the bases full which wins the game by one run.

The Senators clinch their second consecutive American League pennant when they sweep a doubleheader from Cleveland at Griffith Stadium, 4-3 and 6-2. Washington will have a week to get ready before facing Pittsburgh in the Fall Classic.

To the dismay of the 25,000 on hand, the Bucs’ leading batter Kiki Cuyler is hitless.

For the first time in the 50-year history of the franchise, the Cubs end the season in last place. The team, managed by Bill Killefer (33-42), Rabbit Maranville (23-30), and George Gibson (12-14), compiles a 68-86 record and finishes 27.5 games behind the first-place Pirates.
