On August 2, 2011 — Mark Teixeira homers from both sides of the plate for the 12th time to set a new major league all-time record during the Yankees’ rain-shortened 6-0 victory in Chicago. The New York slugging first-baseman surpasses switch-hitters Eddie Murray and Chili Davis, who went yard from both sides of the dish 11 times during their careers.
2011 – Jeff Luhnow is named the General Manager, replacing interim GM Dave Gottfried. Luhnow, signed away from the St.Louis Cardinals, fills the front office with sabermetric types and decides to tear the organization down to the bare bones before rebuilding it into the group that won the Worlds Championship in 2017.

The Braves extend their winning streak to 9 games with a 4 – 3 win in Los Angeles. The Dodgers come into the game with a record of 18-8 at home, but an excellent start by Kris Medlen, coupled with Troy Glaus’s fourth homer in 5 games, propels Atlanta to the win. Jonny Venters, filling in for the unavailable Billy Wagner and an injured Takashi Saito, records his first major league save.

The All-Star Game, for the first time since its inception in 1939, is rained out due to the soggy conditions at RFK Stadium caused by a torrential rainstorm that pelted the nation’s capital during the day. The postponement of the 40th Midsummer Classic, which will be played tomorrow at 12:45 pm, is a disappointment to President Nixon, scheduled throw the ceremonial first pitch, but will be leaving Washington to greet the returning Apollo 11 crew, scheduled to splash somewhere in the Pacific Ocean during the next twenty-four hours after their historic trip to the moon.
