The Phillies’ third baseman, nonetheless, will still be selected by the fans to start the All-Star Game, scheduled to be played at Anaheim Stadium in July but won’t play, At the time he was hitting just .203. 

Schmidt retires at 7th on the all-time home run list with 548 HR. In his superb 18-year career (1972-1989), Schmidt had 1,595 RBI, 1,507 BB, .267 BA, .380 OBP, .527 Slg., .908 OPS, 106.9 WAR, 3 NL MVP Awards (1980-81, 1986), a World Series MVP Award in 1980, and 10 Gold Glove Awards. He was also a 12X All-Star and led the league in home runs 8X, second only to Babe Ruth in MLB history.
