New York Mets manager Casey Stengel, announces his retirement
On August 30, 1965, one of the game’s most legendary figures, New York Mets manager Casey Stengel, announces his retirement. Doctors had advised Stengel to step down after suffering a broken hip in a bathroom fall on July 25. Stengel announces his retirement as manager of the Mets. He will head up Mets scouting in California. Stengel ends a 25-year managerial career with ten pennants with the Yankees, followed by a dismal 175-404 with the expansion Mets. The 75-year-old Stengel has been in professional baseball since 1910. Stengel will gain induction to the Hall of Fame next year.
