A flurry of deals take place today before the holiday break rolls in. San Diego’s deal for SS Jason Bartlett, rumored for a week already, is officially completed, with prospects Adam Russell, Brandon Gomes, Cesar Ramos and Cole Figueroa heading to Tampa Bay. The Padres then complete the revamp of their infield by signing free agent 2B Orlando Hudson for two years. Hudson’s former team, the Twins, in turn announce they have reached a deal with Japanese infielder Tsuyoshi Nishioka for three years.

For a new generation of fans, the term “the Catch” may conjure up memories of Endy Chavez’s NLCS Game 7 leaping catch at Shea’s left field fence with his outstretched glove, grabbing a ball destined to be a Scott Rolen two-run home run, and starting an unbelievable double play. The heroics are overshadowed in the ninth inning as Yadier Molina hits a two-run homer and Carlos Beltran, who has the best HR ratio (11/81) in postseason history, looks at a third strike with the bases loaded with Mets, giving the Cardinals a 3-1 victory and the pennant.

Clay Buchholz strikes out Adam Jones (looking), Matt Wieters (looking), and Chris Davis (swinging) on nine pitches in the bottom of the sixth inning of the Red Sox’s 6-3 victory over Baltimore at Camden Yards. The immaculate inning thrown by the Red Sox right-hander marks the 47th time the feat has been accomplished in major league history, and the first for a Boston hurler since Pedro Martinez turned the trick in 2002.
