On February 13, 1953, the Philadelphia A’s change the name of Shibe Park to Connie Mack Stadium, in honor of their longtime owner and manager. Mack was part-owner and manager of the franchise for a record 50 years. Connie Mack Stadium will remain in existence until 1970, when it is torn down and replaced by Veterans Stadium.
The Angels formally announce the signing of their #1 starter, 28 year-old right-hander Jered Weaver, to a five-year contract extension reported to be worth $85 million. The American League All-Star Game starter, who was eligible to become a free agent after the 2012 season, has compiled a 14-6 record along with a league-leading 2.10 ERA so far this season.

Cody Ross hits two homers and drives in five runs as the Red Sox defeat Atlanta, 9 – 5. 3B Kevin Youkilis is removed from the game after hitting a triple in the 7th inning, then tips his cap to hometown fans and salutes his teammates in a teary farewell. The Sox confirm after the game that Youkilis has been traded to the Chicago White Sox in return for OF Brent Lillibridge and P Zach Stewart. He had recently lost his starting job at 3B to rookie Will Middlebrooks.
