On September 29, 1907 — Phillies’ freshman hurler George McQuillan begins his major league career with 25 shutout innings, establishing a rookie record. The 22 year-old right-hander’s mark will not be matched for 101 years until broken by A’s reliever Brad Ziegler, who will extend the record to 39 1/3 innings in 2008.
