On September 27, 1907 — Pirate star Honus Wagner is hit on the hand by a pitch from Rube Dessau, and will miss the last 12 games of the year.

From Pittsburg Gazzette

Honus” Wagner, the noblest German of them all, and the brightest star in baseball’s varied constellation is out of the game for the remainder of the season. The loss of Wagner, the best batsman and all-around ballplayer in the world, is a serious blow to the Pirates even at this stage, but would have proved irreparable had it occurred a month ago. Wagner was injured yesterday in the first inning of the game at Exposition Park and was forced to retire. While at-bat in the opening round, he was struck on the hand by a swift shoot pitched by “Rube” Dessau. He dropped his bat and gave evidence of being in great pain but the crowd gave him the laugh and’ thought he was merely bluffing in order to be allowed to take his base. He went to first and letter scored, but in the next inning, Tommie Sheehan went to short. Wagner went to the clubhouse an examination of his hand was made at the club physician, who found that, one of the bones in the hand had been fractured. The hand was encased in plaster of paris, and “Honus” went home to Carnegie. ie will play no more ball this fall.
