On August 13, 1939, Red Ruffing of the New York Yankees bangs out four hits and pitches a 21-0 shutout over the Philadelphia Athletics. Babe Dahlgren and Joe DiMaggio hit two home runs apiece, including matching inside-the-park home runs.
2014 – In an unprecedented move, the Astros give out a five-year extension with three club options to Jonathan Singleton, who has yet to play his first major league game. Singleton has had problems with substance abuse in the past, but seems to be over them, and the pact guarantees him a minimum of $10 million even if he turns out to be a complete bust in the big leagues. The Astros will soon get to find out if they have made a smart investment, as, contract issues now out of the way, they call up Singleton and install him as their starting first baseman.

Herb Washington, representing the tying run in the top of the ninth is picked off first base by Dodger closer Mike Marshall for the second out of Game 2, the only contest the A’s will lose in the Fall Classic. The world-class sprinter, who will never have a plate appearance in his brief 105-game career, was selected by Oakland owner Charlie Finley to become the team’s “designated runner,” a position that doesn’t exist with any other major league club.
