On November 20, 1989, Robin Yount of the Milwaukee Brewers becomes only the second player to win MVP awards at two different positions. Yount, the Brewers’ starting center fielder, batted .318 with 21 home runs and 103 RBIs. He won his first MVP Award as a shortstop.
The Marlins obtain OF Gary Sheffield and P Rich Rodriguez from the Padres for P Trevor Hoffman, Andres Berumen and Jose Martinez. The Fish will give Sheffield a four-year contract extension in September. Hoffman, The 25 year-old rookie right-hander will go on to save 552 games for the team during his fifteen and half years with the franchise and be elected into the Hall of Fame.

For the first time in baseball history, two playoff games on the same day end with the score of 1-0. In Game One of the ALCS, the Tigers blank Boston at Fenway Park with the contest’s lone run scoring on Jhonny Peralta’s sac fly in the sixth, and Jon Jay’s fifth-inning sacrifice fly at Busch Stadium provides the only tally the Cardinals will need to take a 2-0 game advantage to Los Angeles in the NLCS.

2005 – The Houston Astros defeat the Atlanta Braves, 7 – 6, in extra innings in Game 4 of the NLDS, on a walk-off homer by substitute Chris Burke. The game sets several records, including the longest postseason game ever at 18 innings, longest postseason game by time (5 hours, 50 minutes), and first postseason game with two grand slams. Houston will now advance to the National League Championship Series for the second year in a row to face the 2004 NL Champion St. Louis Cardinals.
